Sammy Gyamfi yet to be served as lawyers notify High Court of authority to accept Afenyo-Markin’s writ

Lawyers for the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Samuel Adu Gyamfi, have notified the High Court in Accra that they have been authorised to accept service of a writ filed against him by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

In a letter dated August 26, 2026, Ayine & Partners, solicitors for Mr Gyamfi, informed the Registrar of the High Court’s General Division in Accra that they had received the express instructions and authority of their client to accept service of the writ and accompanying court processes on his behalf.

The letter indicates that Mr Gyamfi had not personally received the writ at the time of the notification, with his lawyers instead formally providing their chambers as the address through which service could be effected.

“We act as Solicitors for the 1st Defendant in the above-captioned matter,” the lawyers stated.

“We write to respectfully inform the Court that we have received the express instructions and authority of the 1st Defendant to accept service of the Writ of Summons issued by the Plaintiff, together with all accompanying processes, on his behalf in this matter.”

The lawyers subsequently asked the court to take notice that the writ and any accompanying originating processes could be duly served on Mr Gyamfi through their chambers at House No. C809/29, 1st Close Lily Street, East Legon, Accra.

They also requested the court to update its records accordingly.

The development comes days after Mr Afenyo-Markin announced that he had initiated legal action against Mr Gyamfi and Multimedia Group Limited over comments he considers defamatory.

The Effutu MP disclosed the action in Parliament on August 24, 2026, after a public dispute between him and the GoldBod CEO over the reported US$1.7 billion loss associated with the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP).

The dispute escalated after Mr Gyamfi described Mr Afenyo-Markin as an “extortionist” during an appearance on JoyNews’ Newsfile programme on August 22. Mr Gyamfi was responding to Mr Afenyo-Markin’s criticism of GoldBod and his demands for accountability over the reported losses.

Mr Afenyo-Markin subsequently filed a defamation suit at the Accra High Court, seeking GH¢15 million in damages, as well as an order for a full, unconditional and unequivocal retraction of the alleged defamatory statements and an apology.

The suit, identified as Suit No. GT/1029/2026, names Mr Gyamfi and Multimedia Group Limited as defendants. Mr Afenyo-Markin also initiated a separate action at the Achimota Circuit Court against National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP) Chief Executive Officer Eric Adjei and Peace FM over similar allegations.

Mr Afenyo-Markin has maintained that he is prepared to submit himself to any investigation into the extortion allegations and said he had chosen to allow the courts to determine the matter.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has also said it will assess the extortion allegations made by Mr Gyamfi against the Minority Leader and determine whether they fall within its statutory mandate and whether further investigative action is warranted.
