Special Prosecutor slaps Ofori-Atta, SML, 6 others with 78 counts of corruption charges

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has formally charged former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML), and six other individuals with a total of 78 counts of corruption and corruption-related offences.

The charges are on the back of the controversial multi-million-cedi revenue assurance contracts awarded to SML during Mr Ofori-Atta’s tenure as Finance Minister.

President John Dramani Mahama, on October 31, 2025, ordered the immediate termination of all government contracts with SML following the conclusion of the OSP’s investigation, citing the government’s zero-tolerance stance on corruption and commitment to transparency in public resource management.

The OSP has indicated that repeated attempts to get Mr Ofori-Atta, who is currently outside the country, to appear in person for questioning proved unsuccessful.

Consequently, the Special Prosecutor has initiated extradition proceedings to bring the former Minister back to Ghana to face trial.

The charging document, filed at the High Court, lists Ken Ofori-Atta and SML as the primary accused, alongside six other individuals believed to be officials and associates linked to the transactions.

The other listed accused persons are Ernest Darko Akore, Emmanuel Kofi Nti, Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah, Isaac Crentsil, Kwadwo Damoah, Evans Adusei and Strategic Mobilisation Network (SML).

A statement from the OSP said the 78 counts include causing financial loss to the state, contravention of procurement laws, and using public office for profit, among others.

“The OSP this morning formally charged former Minister for Finance, Kenneth Nana Yaw Ofori-Atta and 7 others with 78 counts of corruption and corruption-related offences,” the OSP shared in a social media post on Tuesday, 18 November 2025.

The case has reignited public debate over the SML contracts, which were heavily criticised for alleged irregularities and lack of parliamentary approval when they were first exposed.
