The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has announced that two generation units affected by the recent fire at the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCO) Akosombo Substation have been successfully restored, with repair works still ongoing on the remaining units.
The fire outbreak severely damaged the substation’s control room, leading to disruptions in electricity transmission and evacuation capacity, which contributed to concerns over erratic power supply in parts of the country.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series in Accra on Monday, April 27, Jinapor provided an update on efforts to stabilise the national grid.
“Through emergency technical interventions, the first-generation unit was successfully restored yesterday. This afternoon, I received confirmation that the second unit has also been brought on and is generating power. The third unit is undergoing works and it will also be brought on as soon as possible,” the Minister said.
Jinapor added that engineers are working round the clock to restore full operational capacity, with additional units expected to be fixed in the coming days to improve overall system stability and power evacuation from generation sources.
The restoration of the two units is expected to ease some of the pressure on the national grid following the incident. The government has assured the public that all necessary measures are being taken to normalise power supply as quickly as possible.
