The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has declared that all academic certificates issued by the University of Ghana (UG) through its six unaccredited learning centres will not be recognised for employment, further studies, or promotion.
In a public notice issued on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, GTEC named the affected University of Ghana learning centres as Koforidua, Cape Coast, Tamale, Ho/Tsito, Wa, and Sunyani, stating that none of these facilities have received accreditation from the Commission.
“The following Learning Centres currently operated by the University of Ghana (UG) have not been accredited by the Commission,” GTEC said, warning that “all academic qualifications issued by the University at these centres are not recognised by GTEC.”
The development comes as a major blow to hundreds of students currently enrolled or who have graduated from these centres through the University of Ghana’s College of Education distance learning programmes.
In the same notice, GTEC directed eleven other tertiary institutions to immediately suspend fresh admissions until they meet required accreditation standards. The institutions barred from admitting new students include:
– Institute of Business Management and Journalism, Kumasi
– Rural Development College, Kwaso
– University College of Agriculture and Environmental Studies, Bunso
– School of Anaesthesia, Kumasi
– Unique Citizens College, Accra
– Kings and Queens Medical College, Akosombo
– Springs College, Accra
– Wintech Professional Institute
– Trans Africa College
– Royal Nursing College
– OAA Consulting Limited (local partner of Universidad Empresarial De Costa Rica)
Additionally, GTEC revealed that 26 institutions, including Abbeam Institute of Technology (Kasoa), Lakeside University College (Accra), several Nursing and Midwifery Training Colleges, and Holy Spirit College of Education (Ho), are currently operating with expired institutional accreditation.
GTEC urged prospective students, parents, and the public to verify the accreditation status of any institution or programme before enrolment.
“Enrolling in unaccredited institutions or Learning Centres poses serious risks, including the potential loss of time, financial resources, and future career opportunities,” the Commission warned.
The regulator said it has made accreditation verification tools available on its official website and encouraged the public to contact GTEC directly for confirmation before making any academic or financial commitment.
