We must win decisively in 2028 – Minority Leader expresses strong hope for NPP victory

Minority Leader in Parliament and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has urged members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to work relentlessly towards securing a decisive parliamentary majority in the 2028 general elections.

Speaking during a meeting with the Tertiary Students Confederacy (TESCON) on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, Mr Afenyo-Markin expressed strong confidence in the party’s strength and resilience, despite currently holding minority status with 87 seats in Parliament.

“We are 87, but trust me, we are mighty. It is not by word of mouth that we say we are mighty; we know it ourselves,” he stated.

He downplayed the numerical strength of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), saying “their 189 does not say anything and is empty.”

The Effutu MP stressed that the NPP remains a formidable force and must harness its potential to achieve a commanding victory in the next election cycle.

“We hold the power, so this time we want a mighty huge [victory]. We need a majority for Dr Bawumia in Parliament,” he declared.

Mr Afenyo-Markin drew similarities between the current political atmosphere and the period before the 2016 elections, which brought the NPP back to power.

“The feeling I had in 2015 is the same feeling I am feeling today. In 2015, I said no matter what, we would win 2016, and we did,” he noted.

He also commented on the NDC, suggesting there is uncertainty within the party regarding its future leadership, with some claims that former President John Dramani Mahama may not contest another term.

“Some are saying that Mahama is not coming back, that he is just doing one term. Even the NDC does not know the candidate they will bring,” he remarked.

In contrast, the Minority Leader said the NPP has a clear and tested flagbearer in Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

“As for us, we have a candidate. He has been tried and tested. He is a man with solutions. Let us back him and start the new transformation under Dr Bawumia — no bend, no curve,” he urged party supporters.
