We’re focused on basic needs – President Mahama on priority of anti-LGBTQ+ bill

President John Dramani Mahama has stated that while the Anti-LGBTQ+ bill remains an important national discussion, his government’s primary focus is on addressing the basic needs of Ghanaians, including education, healthcare, jobs, food, clothing, and shelter.

The President made the remarks during a Presidential Dialogue with Civil Society Organisations at Jubilee House in Accra on Monday, March 30.

Describing the LGBTQ+ issue as deeply sensitive and emotionally charged — even in countries with long-standing liberal traditions — President Mahama called for calm, measured, and constructive engagement guided by national values.

“We are still grappling with the provisions of basic needs of education, health care, jobs, food, clothing, and shelter,” he stated.

He noted that the ongoing debate surrounding the private member’s bill in Parliament reflects the diverse views within Ghanaian society. He emphasised that any decisions on the matter must align with the Constitution, uphold human rights, and preserve national unity.

“While there are strong and differing views within our society, we believe that issues must be addressed through democratic processes, our core values, dialogue, and the rule of law,” President Mahama said.

The President also acknowledged reactions from the international community, including recent developments involving institutions abroad, and stressed the importance of mutual respect and constructive engagement.

According to him, Ghana will continue to balance its constitutional principles with its cultural context while maintaining positive relations on the global stage.
