Wontumi targeted in attempted poisoning in prison – Spokesperson alleges
NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako also known as Chairman Wontumi
A senior aide to former Ashanti Regional New Patriotic Party (NPP) chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, says some inmates allegedly attempted to poison him in prison.
Dr Palgrave Boakye-Danquah said Mr Wontumi told him about the alleged incident when he appeared in court on Tuesday, October 27. He said prison authorities had begun investigating the claim.
Speaking to Accra-based Citi FM as Mr Wontumi marked 100 days in prison, Dr Boakye-Danquah said he had spoken with the prison commander, who assured him that the matter was being investigated.
“He mentioned that to me today when he came to court, and I have spoken to the commander, and the commander said he has asked them to investigate the matter, so he will come back to me on that issue. This attempted poisoning of his life happened a few days ago,” he said.
Dr Boakye-Danquah said no medical report had been received in connection with the allegation and that investigators were working to verify whether it was true.
“Chairman is okay. We haven’t received any medical reports from the doctors. But I have received indications that over the past week, some prison inmates attempted to poison him,” he told Citi FM.
He added that investigations were ongoing to establish the facts.
