The Ghana Police Service has issued a statement to quash circulating rumours on social media claiming the death of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno, describing the reports as malicious disinformation and vowing to prosecute those responsible.
In an official statement issued on Sunday, November 30, 2025, the Police Service categorically denied the speculations, affirming that the IGP is “alive and well and discharging his mandate” without interruption. The statement, shared across the Service’s official social media platforms, urged officers, family members, loved ones, and the general public to disregard the false narratives.
“The attention of the Ghana Police Service has been drawn to some speculation that the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno is deceased. We wish to categorically state that these reports are false,” the statement read.
“The IGP is alive and well and going about his duties as expected,” it added.
The statement warned that disinformation remains a criminal act under Ghana’s laws and that persons behind the rumour will be brought to book.
“We urge our officers, family members, loved ones, and the general public to disregard these reports.
“We would like to caution persons behind these malicious, insensitive, and reckless claims to note that disinformation constitutes an offense and perpetrators will be brought to justice when identified,” the service said.
The rumours comes on the back Mr Yohuno’s recent two-year contract extension, approved by President John Dramani Mahama on November 25, 2025, following a recommendation from the Police Council.
The extension, effective from December 28, 2025—shortly after Yohuno’s 60th birthday on December 27, was confirmed in a letter announcing the extension, signed by Secretary to the President, Dr Callistus Mahama.
Christian Tetteh Yohuno was appointed IGP by President Mahama on March 13, 2025, replacing Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.
Mr Yohuno has held key positions, including Divisional Commander for Accra Central and Deputy IGP in charge of Operations under the previous administration.
