2028 flagbearership talk ‘a betrayal of the cause’ – Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang

Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has rejected speculation about a possible bid for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential nomination ahead of the 2028 general election.

She said the immediate priority of the government should be to fulfil the mandate given to it by Ghanaians rather than engage in premature discussions about who should lead the party in the next election.

The Vice President made the comments during an interview on the latest edition of The KSM Show, hosted by KSM, when she was asked whether she would consider contesting the NDC flagbearership.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang instead pointed to the extensive consultations that preceded the drafting of the NDC’s 2024 manifesto, Resetting Ghana: Jobs, Accountability, Prosperity, saying the document reflected contributions from Ghanaians across the country and beyond.

According to her, the party won the 2024 election on the basis of a mandate to address the challenges confronting the country and not to immediately begin positioning for the next election.

“They didn’t vote for us today to be turning about, going or not going. They said, ‘Come and solve the problems’. We have an agenda. What we inherited was a very, very tough situation. We have work to do,” she said.

She warned that an early focus on the 2028 NDC flagbearership could undermine the purpose for which the government was elected.

“And it’s not even time [for NDC flagbearer elections]. I think it’s a betrayal of the cause of the people. And I don’t think it is right,” she stressed.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang consequently appealed to NDC members and supporters to concentrate on the implementation of the government’s programmes and the delivery of results to Ghanaians.

“So please help us to fulfil the dreams of this beautiful country that we know much better, even though it is doing now. Let us focus on getting the job done,” she said.

She further indicated that the administration’s performance should be measured by the quality of its work and the support it provides to Ghanaians, rather than speculation about its political future.

“Keep the focus, fulfil the mission, deliver results,” the Vice President said.

Her comments come amid growing attention within the NDC to the party’s succession ahead of the 2028 general election.

President John Dramani Mahama, having returned to office after winning the 2024 presidential election, will be constitutionally barred from seeking another term in 2028.

The NDC’s 2024 campaign was anchored on its Resetting Ghana: Jobs, Accountability, Prosperity manifesto, which outlined the party’s policy agenda for the country.
