Nine miners have been trapped underground following the collapse of a mining pit on Wednesday evening in Konongo, in the Asante Akyem Central Municipality of the Ashanti Region.
The incident occurred while the miners were working underground, causing the pit to cave in and completely blocking their exit route, leaving them trapped beneath the debris.
Rescue teams, supported by fellow miners, have been working tirelessly at the site since the collapse to reach the trapped victims. However, no one had been rescued as of the time of filing this report.
The Asante Akyem Central Municipal Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Lanbon Joseph, confirmed the incident in an interview with Adom News.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of the trapped miners. It is also unclear whether there have been any fatalities.
Rescue operations are said to be ongoing, with efforts focused on safely removing the debris and reaching the trapped individuals.
