Japan beat Ghana’s Black Stars 2:0 in Kirin Challenge friendly match

Ghana’s Black Stars fell to a 2-0 defeat against hosts Japan in the Kirin Challenge Cup friendly at the Toyota Stadium on Friday, November 14, 2025.

The match, played under lights in front of a vibrant home crowd, exposed Ghana’s vulnerabilities as the team fielded a depleted squad missing key stars Mohammed Kudus, Jordan Ayew, and Thomas Partey due to injury and club commitments.

Japan, buoyed by their recent 3-2 upset victory over Brazil, dominated proceedings from the outset, controlling possession and probing Ghana’s compact five-man defensive setup.

Despite early resistance, the Samurai Blue broke the deadlock in the 16th minute. A well-worked move saw Watanabe Tsuyoshi advance down the flank before linking with Sano Kaishu. The ball was swiftly moved through Doan, Watanabe, and Kubo Takefusa, leaving Takumi Minamino unmarked to slot home calmly past goalkeeper Joseph Anang.

Ghana struggled to create meaningful chances in the first half, with Japan’s high pressing disrupting the Black Stars’ rhythm.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Japan continuing to dictate play.

In the 60th minute, Ritsu Doan doubled the lead.

Receiving a precise pass from Kubo Takefusa on the right side of the box, Doan unleashed a powerful shot into the near post, leaving Anang with no chance.

The Black Stars’ woes were compounded when midfielder Francis Abu suffered a serious injury late in the game and had to be stretchered off, raising concerns over his availability for upcoming matches.

Japan introduced three debutants in the closing stages, while Ghana failed to mount a meaningful comeback.

The final score remained 2-0 in favour of Japan, marking another challenging outing for the Black Stars under interim management as they build towards the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Ghana will now shift focus to their next friendly against South Korea on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, as part of the ongoing international tour.

Head coach Otto Addo is expected to use these matches to assess fringe players and integrate youth into the senior team amid a transitional phase.
