Ghanaians will face higher utility bills from January 1, 2026, after the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) approved increases in electricity and water tariffs.
Electricity tariffs will go up by 9.86%, while water tariffs will rise by 15.92% across all consumer categories, as part of a multi-year tariff review covering 2026 to 2030.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, PURC explained that the adjustments are necessary to enable utility providers to meet critical investment needs, maintain industry competitiveness, and protect consumer interests in the long term.
The Commission also noted that the new tariff structure includes provisions for quarterly adjustments to reflect key variables outside the control of service providers, such as inflation, exchange rate fluctuations, international fuel prices, and changes in the power generation mix.
For the first time, tariffs for mini-grids have been introduced to facilitate electricity access in island and lake-side communities, with the associated costs incorporated into the Volta River Authority’s (VRA) revenue requirement.
PURC stressed that the decision followed extensive stakeholder engagements, public hearings, and a thorough analysis of proposals submitted by the utility companies.
“The Commission remains committed to monitoring the performance of the utility service providers to ensure operational efficiency, value-for-money service delivery, and strict compliance with regulatory benchmarks,” the statement added.
