Veteran backing vocalist Maame Tiwaa, the iconic female voice behind legendary gospel artiste Yaw Sarpong and his Asomafo band has died.

Maame Tiwaa died in the early hours of Sunday, December 7, 2025, after a brief illness, multiple sources have confirmed.

For over three decades, Maame Tiwaa’s rich and soothing voice became inseparable from Yaw Sarpong’s ministry, featuring prominently on timeless gospel hits that have shaped contemporary Ghanaian Christian worship.

She was a permanent fixture on stage with the Asomafo crew, delivering powerful harmonies and lead lines on songs that continue to bless millions of believers across the country and beyond.

Her last major public appearances included a heartfelt tribute performance for Yaw Sarpong at the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) and a joyful rendition at her own son’s wedding.

In recent months, Maame Tiwaa had taken time off regular performances to care for Yaw Sarpong during his prolonged health challenges, demonstrating the deep bond within the music group.

News of her demise has sent shockwaves through the gospel fraternity, with fans, colleagues and church leaders taking to social media to pay glowing tributes.
