Manchester United fires Rubin Amorim as head coach

Manchester United have sacked head coach Ruben Amorim after just 14 months in charge, following a breakdown in relations with the club’s hierarchy and a series of poor results.

In an official club statement released on Monday, January 5, 2026, the Red Devils announced that the Portuguese coach had “departed his role as Head Coach of Manchester United.”

Amorim, who was appointed in November 2024, led the team to the UEFA Europa League final in Bilbao in May 2025, where they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

The statement noted that with United currently sitting sixth in the Premier League, the leadership had “reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change” to maximise chances of a strong finish in the league table.

The club expressed gratitude for Amorim’s contributions and wished him well for the future.

Former United midfielder Darren Fletcher will take interim charge of the team for their upcoming Premier League fixture against Burnley on Wednesday.

The decision comes less than 24 hours after Amorim’s public criticism of the club’s recruitment department following a 1-1 draw away at Leeds United on Sunday, which proved to be his final match in charge.

Reports indicate tensions had been building over transfer policy and tactical direction, with Amorim having overseen a win percentage below 40% during his tenure at Old Trafford.

This marks the latest managerial change in a turbulent period for Manchester United since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013.
