A group of 118 former New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidates from the 2024 general elections has publicly declared its support for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia ahead of the party’s presidential primaries slated for January 31, 2026.
The endorsement was announced at a press conference on Thursday, January 8, 2026, further solidifying internal support for Dr Bawumia, the NPP’s 2024 presidential candidate who is seeking to lead the party again into the next general election.
The former parliamentary candidates described their collective decision as a strong show of unity and cohesion within the NPP, emphasizing that a significant number of the party’s frontline representatives from 2024 are now aligning behind one candidate.
They noted that this declaration builds on an earlier endorsement by 63 NPP Members of Parliament who secured seats in the 2024 elections, indicating increasing momentum within the party.
The group explained that their decision came after extensive consultations with various party structures and broader societal groups, including polling station executives, constituency executives, former party officers, councils of elders and patrons, youth groups, market women, farmers, fisherfolk, business leaders, opinion leaders, religious figures, and traditional authorities.
Feedback from these engagements, according to the group, showed overwhelming support for Dr Bawumia across constituencies.
The former candidates stressed that their backing was based on careful analysis, a sense of duty, and genuine conviction, without any influence from inducements, coercion, or external pressure.
They hailed Dr Bawumia, Ghana’s former Vice President, as a visionary leader embodying competence, integrity, and innovation. They highlighted his pivotal role in the country’s digital transformation, contributions to economic management, and leadership in programs like the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme, as well as efforts toward macroeconomic stabilization.
The group portrayed Dr Bawumia as the most prepared, experienced, and electable candidate for the NPP’s future, with a clear agenda focused on digitalization, economic transformation, infrastructure development, human capital enhancement, agricultural modernization, and good governance.
They committed to actively collaborating with him to ensure victory in the presidential primaries and subsequent general elections, while urging all party members to rally behind his candidacy for the benefit of the NPP and Ghana as a whole.
