A family in the Central Region has been left in shock and disarray after discovering that the body of their deceased relative, George Kwame Antwi, was missing from the Assin Brofoyedur Mortuary just hours before his scheduled burial.
The 40-year-old steward of the Presbyterian Church at Assin Odumase passed away in September 2025, and his remains were deposited at the mortuary for preservation.
According to a Citinewsroom report, the family had made extensive preparations for the funeral, including payments for undertakers, sound systems, canopies, mattresses, accommodation, and other logistics. Mourners from across the country had already arrived for the burial set for Saturday, January 17, 2026.
However, when relatives went to retrieve the body for the final rites, mortuary attendants could not locate it, throwing the entire programme into chaos.
Information obtained by Citi News indicates that Antwi’s body was mistakenly swapped with that of a 75-year-old man and had been buried by another family approximately three months prior.
Speaking to Citi News at the family residence, the head of the family, Asare Oduro, recounted the ordeal.
“A delegation was sent to the mortuary to retrieve the body, but we were directed to report to the Assin Fosu Police Station. There, we were informed that another family had wrongly buried our relative about three months ago,” he narrated.
The family is now demanding compensation to cover the costs incurred for the funeral preparations, as well as the exhumation of Antwi’s remains. It remains uncertain when the burial will be rescheduled.
Authorities at the mortuary and the police have yet to provide further details on how the mix-up occurred.
