Gospel legend Yaw Sarpong is dead

Legendary Ghanaian gospel musician and founder of the iconic Asomafo group, Yaw Sarpong, has passed away.

The sad news was confirmed by his manager, Nana Poku Ashis, in a publication by MyJoyOnline.com on Tuesday, January 2, 2025.

Further details regarding the circumstances of his death, including the exact cause, are yet to be officially disclosed by the family or relevant authorities.

His passing comes just over a month after the death of Maame Tiwaa, a beloved key member and backing vocalist of Yaw Sarpong & Asomafo, who died in early December 2025 after a brief illness.

That loss had already deeply affected the gospel fraternity and reportedly took a heavy emotional toll on the veteran artiste.

Yaw Sarpong had been battling health challenges for several years, which led him to occasionally step back from public performances to focus on treatment and recovery.

Despite these setbacks, his influence on Ghanaian gospel music remained profound. Widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the history of Ghana’s gospel scene, Yaw Sarpong rose to national prominence as the leader of Yaw Sarpong & Asomafo.

The group revolutionised modern Akan gospel music with its strong lyrical content, disciplined musical style, and deep roots in Christian doctrine.

Over the decades, the group produced timeless hits that continue to resonate in churches and homes across the country, including classics such as “Wo Haw Ne Hwan,” “Tie Obiaa,” “Aduro Yesu,” and “Awurade Kasa.”

In recognition of his immense contributions to gospel music and Ghanaian culture, Yaw Sarpong was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards in 2025.
