The Ashanti Regional capital, Kumasi, has been hit by two devastating fire outbreaks within a span of just 24 hours, leaving traders and business owners counting significant losses.
The latest incident occurred on Monday evening when a fierce blaze swept through the Anwona Market near Afful Nkwanta in the Kumasi Metropolis. Eyewitnesses reported that the fire erupted around 10 p.m., originating from the footwear factory section where flammable materials are typically stored.
The flames quickly spread, causing extensive damage to several shops and stalls in the market.
Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) responded promptly and are currently on the scene, working tirelessly to extinguish the fire and prevent further destruction.
No casualties have been reported so far, but the full extent of the damage is yet to be assessed.
This comes barely a day after a similar fire outbreak ravaged a cluster of mechanic shops at Sofoline in Kumasi.
The Sofoline incident, which occurred on Sunday, destroyed valuable properties and equipment, disrupting livelihoods in the area.
Local authorities are investigating the causes of both fires, with preliminary suspicions pointing to possible electrical faults or mishandling of flammable substances.
Residents and traders in the affected areas have called for enhanced fire safety measures and regular inspections to avert future disasters.
