The Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, has called on the public to take personal responsibility for their security and remain highly vigilant, especially against cybercrimes and other emerging threats.
Speaking at a news briefing on Thursday, January 29, 2026, COP Donkor urged citizens to exercise caution on digital and social media platforms while sharing personal information.
“Remain vigilant against cyber and online crimes and exercise due caution on digital and social media platforms,” she advised.
The briefing came on the heels of successful police operations that led to the arrest of two members of a robbery gang. COP Donkor revealed that seven suspected robbers, believed to have attacked travellers—including a member of the Council of State in the Northern Region—as well as five others linked to a robbery incident at Nkaseim in the Ahafo Region, are currently assisting with investigations.
She attributed the recent successes of the Ghana Police Service to sustained, intelligence-led operations targeting robbery and violent crimes nationwide.
These intensified efforts, she explained, are part of a broader national strategy to safeguard lives, protect property, and ensure public safety.
“I would like to take this opportunity to urge us all to take our personal security seriously,” COP Donkor emphasised.
The CID boss cautioned the public against disclosing personal or financial details to unknown individuals, warning them to be sceptical of unsolicited messages or calls seeking sensitive information.
She also issued specific advice to motorists and those involved in vehicle transactions, urging them to stay alert, particularly when driving at night or through isolated areas. She recommended securing vehicles properly, avoiding picking up strangers, and treating distress signals with suspicion as they could be staged to lure victims.
“Finally, let us adopt basic safety measures in our daily routines,” she added.
COP Donkor encouraged Ghanaians to remain watchful in crowded places, share their travel plans with trusted individuals, and report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station without delay.
She commended officers across the country for their dedication and professionalism in the line of duty.
“Your commitment remains central to the success of our operations. We are also grateful to members of the public who continue to support our work with credible and timely information,” she said.
The CID Director-General further thanked media organisations for their role in amplifying police messages and fostering public awareness.
“Your collaboration remains invaluable in the fight against crime, and we deeply value the role you play in promoting public safety and accountability,” she concluded.
