President John Dramani Mahama has ordered the National Investigation Bureau (NIB) to launch a probe into allegations of improprieties in the award of government-sponsored overseas scholarships, including claims that individuals paid money to secure such opportunities.
The directive follows public attention generated by a radio discussion on Kumasi-based Sompa FM, where Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, a former Chief Executive Officer of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), alleged that a person had paid to obtain a scholarship for studies abroad.
Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister in charge of Government Communications, announced the President’s action, noting that President Mahama views the allegations as serious and of grave public concern.
He emphasised the administration’s unwavering commitment to transparency, integrity, and ensuring equal access to educational opportunities for all qualified Ghanaians.
In a letter dated February 3, 2026, signed by Callistus Mahama, Secretary to the President, and addressed to the Director-General of the NIB, the bureau has been instructed to immediately investigate the matter.
The probe is to establish the factual basis of the claims, identify any individuals involved, and determine the veracity of the allegations.
“The Bureau has also been directed to submit its findings to the President for consideration and any appropriate action that may arise,” the letter stated.
