Police in the Kotobabi District have arrested two suspected phone snatchers following a high-speed chase in Dzorwulu, leading to the recovery of multiple stolen mobile phones, cash, and other valuables, as well as the subsequent arrest of four additional accomplices.
The suspects, identified as Stephen Gletsu, 37, and Mohammed Sheriff, 20, were apprehended on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, during an intelligence-led patrol operation. According to a police statement, a patrol team on a service motorbike spotted the duo riding an unregistered black Royal 125 motorbike along the Dzorwulu area. Both men were dressed in all-black attire and wearing black helmets, with the pillion rider openly wielding a cutlass.
Upon noticing the police presence, the suspects attempted to flee, sparking a dramatic chase in which warning shots were fired by the officers. The pursuit ended near the Nigerian High Commission at Roman Ridge when the suspects lost control of the motorbike and crashed. Although they tried to escape on foot, they were quickly traced and arrested.
A search conducted on the duo recovered a significant haul of suspected stolen items, including one Infinix mobile phone, one iPhone 12 Pro, one Samsung A21, one iPhone 15 Pro, one iPhone 13, one Infinix feature phone, one iel feature phone, one Nokia feature phone, one Infinix X6528 phone, a necklace, and cash amounting to GH¢2,690.00 and USD 2. Both suspects sustained injuries during the arrest and were treated at the Police Hospital.
During interrogation, Gletsu and Sheriff reportedly admitted to carrying out the robbery and confessed to having robbed several unsuspecting victims across the Accra Metropolis, often using a machete to intimidate their targets. The police have since obtained statements from multiple victims, several of whom positively identified the suspects and recovered their stolen mobile phones after narrating their ordeals.
The arrests have triggered further investigations, resulting in the apprehension of four additional accomplices believed to be part of the same robbery network. The two principal suspects have been remanded into police custody, arraigned before court, and are scheduled to reappear on Wednesday, February 4, 2026.
The Kotobabi District Police Command has urged members of the public who may have fallen victim to similar phone-snatching incidents in and around Dzorwulu, Roman Ridge, and other parts of the Accra Metropolis to contact the police with relevant information to aid ongoing investigations.
