TMPC cracks down on unlicensed herbal operators in Madina and Ashaiman

The Traditional Medicine Practice Council (TMPC) has carried out a targeted enforcement operation in Madina and parts of Ashaiman, shutting down several herbal and naturopathic facilities found to be operating without valid licences or certifications.

Among the facilities closed were Bibio Herbal Centre in Madina and My Redeemer Naturopathic Treatment Centre in Ashaiman Jericho, both of which were operating with expired licences. At Ashaiman Atadeka, Amuzu Herbal Centre was shut down for operating with an expired licence and practitioner certificate, while K. Duah Herbal Centre was closed for operating without registration or a valid operating licence.

The operation, led by the Council’s Compliance and Enforcement Unit with police support, also targeted unlicensed tabletop herbal vendors. Some vendors fled upon noticing the inspection team, prompting the confiscation of their products. Warning notices were subsequently pasted on their tables, directing them to report to the TMPC to regularise their operations.

In Madina, a herbal hawker identified as Ben had his products seized and was instructed to report to the Council to obtain a hawker’s licence. He later told reporters that he was unaware of the requirement for a licence to sell herbal products.

According to the Head of the Compliance and Enforcement Unit, Michael Lawson, the closures were necessary to prevent public exposure to potentially unsafe herbal products, particularly from operators who had failed to renew licences or obtain the required certification.

The Registrar of the TMPC, Dr (MH) Yusuf Yakubu, said the exercise was part of sustained efforts to sanitise the traditional medicine sector and ensure public safety.

He stressed that while the Council continued to prioritise education and engagement with practitioners, enforcement would be applied where operators ignored regulatory requirements.

Dr Yakubu assured the public that the TMPC would maintain regular inspections across the country to ensure that traditional medicine practice met acceptable standards of safety, professionalism, and accountability.
