The Member of Parliament-elect for Ayawaso East, Baba Jamal, is set to be sworn into office today, Tuesday, March 10, 2026, by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin.

The swearing-in ceremony comes a week after Baba Jamal’s decisive victory in the Ayawaso East by-election held on Tuesday, March 3, 2026. Representing the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), he secured the seat in a constituency long considered an NDC stronghold.

In a Facebook post on Monday, March 9, Baba Jamal announced the upcoming ceremony and expressed his profound humility at the opportunity to serve. He pledged to collaborate closely with constituents to foster development and progress in the area.

“Indeed, Allah’s ways are perfect. I am deeply humbled by the opportunity to serve, and I look forward to working together with you to build a brighter and greater future for the Ayawaso East Constituency,” he stated.

Baba Jamal polled 10,884 votes to comfortably defeat his closest rival, Yusif Ali Baba of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who received 4,009 votes. Other contenders included independent candidate Mohammed Umar Sanda with 1,885 votes, Ibrahim Idrissu with 43 votes, and Kanor David with 104 votes.

A total of 16,928 valid votes were cast, with 120 rejected ballots, resulting in 17,048 total votes recorded.

The by-election was called to fill the vacancy left by the death of the previous MP, Mahama Naser Toure, in January 2026.

Upon his swearing-in, Baba Jamal will officially take his seat in Parliament and begin representing the interests of the people of Ayawaso East.

The ceremony is expected to take place during today’s sitting of the House.
