Frank Davies, a lawyer representing former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, has stated that his client will vigorously contest any extradition proceedings initiated by Ghanaian authorities to bring him back from the United States.
The comments come amid reports that Ghana has submitted an extradition request to the US over corruption-related allegations against Mr Ofori-Atta during his time in office. Mr Ofori-Atta is currently in the US, where he is reportedly seeking permanent residency and has expressed concerns about receiving a fair trial if returned to Ghana.
In an interview on Channel One Newsroom on Sunday, March 15, 2026, Mr Davies confirmed that the government has taken steps toward extradition but emphasised that the process would face strong legal opposition.
“The government has put in an extradition request. Following from that will be extradition proceedings. So one way or the other, there is every indication that this matter will be contested. So, when we get there we will cross,” he said.
Mr Davies added that the clear purpose of the extradition effort is to secure Mr Ofori-Atta’s removal from the US and his return to Ghana to face the charges.
“I believe the intention of the extradition is to have Ken removed from the US and be brought down to Ghana,” he noted.
The former finance minister has been under intense scrutiny over various corruption allegations linked to his tenure. He and others have been charged with several counts by the Office of the Special Prosecutor in related investigations.
Mr Ofori-Atta’s legal team has previously challenged aspects of his immigration status in the US, including detention by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), as part of broader efforts to remain in the country.
