Ghana’s ambassador to the United States, Victor Emmanuel Smith, has met with the White House Task Force on the FIFA World Cup 2026 to discuss arrangements for Ghanaian attendees at the tournament.
The meeting took place on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, at the Embassy of Ghana in Washington, DC.
It brought together members of the embassy’s committee responsible for the World Cup, chaired by Head of Consular Services Mr Bernard Quantson.
Key discussions focused on visa processes for Ghanaians travelling to the US for the tournament, ticket availability and costs, safety and security measures, public transportation options, distances from potential base camps to stadiums, and arrangements for dignitaries.
The talks also explored opportunities to strengthen Ghana-US sports diplomacy through the event.
Led by Executive Director Andrew A. Guiliamo, the Task Force assured Ambassador Smith that necessary provisions have been made to facilitate attendance by Ghanaians, consistent with arrangements for other participating nations.
However, concerns were raised about the reportedly high rate of visa refusals for Ghanaians. The embassy delegation called for a review of visa considerations beyond standard B1/B2 categories.
Emphasis was also placed on ensuring that supporters return to Ghana promptly after the tournament to comply with US immigration rules and avoid issues with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The engagement aligns with the embassy’s mandate to safeguard the welfare of Ghanaians attending the global event and promote bilateral ties through sports.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be hosted by USA, Canada and Mexico.
