The Ghana Navy has intercepted a canoe carrying 37 sacks of substances suspected to be cannabis during a maritime operation at Goi, near Ada in the Greater Accra Region.

The operation, carried out by operatives of the Navy’s Special Boat Squadron on Friday, March 27, 2026, was based on credible intelligence. The team tracked and pursued the suspicious canoe as it attempted to land along the coast.

Upon interception, the suspects reportedly abandoned the vessel and fled the scene. A subsequent search of the canoe uncovered 37 sacks containing compressed materials believed to be Indian hemp (cannabis).

Preliminary checks by the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) suggest that each sack contains about 70 parcels of the suspected substance, indicating a large quantity likely meant for distribution.

In addition to the sacks, the team recovered items believed to have been used in the smuggling operation, including an outboard motor, two gallons of premix fuel, and five empty containers.

The seized canoe and all recovered items have been handed over to NACOC for further investigation, forensic analysis, and possible prosecution.

NACOC has taken custody of the exhibits and has begun investigations to identify and arrest those behind the smuggling attempt.

Surveillance and enforcement activities in the area have been stepped up as part of ongoing efforts to curb drug trafficking along Ghana’s coastline.
