Minister for Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has directed the immediate cancellation of a planned welcome reception organised by staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs ahead of his return to Ghana.

In a social media post on Sunday, March 29, 2026, the Minister disclosed that he became aware of arrangements for the airport reception, which the Ministry traditionally organises as a gesture to celebrate major national achievements.

While expressing appreciation for the thoughtful initiative, Mr Ablakwa instructed management to halt the plans, stressing that the moment did not call for personal celebration.

“I have expressed my appreciation to management for their thoughtful gesture and instructed that all such plans to offer me a welcome at the Airport be cancelled immediately. I would have strongly opposed the idea if I had been consulted. This is not a personal victory, and besides, there is more work ahead of us,” he said.

The directive comes on the back of Ghana’s recent diplomatic success at the United Nations, where a resolution spearheaded by Ghana declaring the trafficking of enslaved Africans and the racialised chattel enslavement of Africans as the gravest crime against humanity was adopted by the UN General Assembly on March 25, 2026.

Mr Ablakwa also commended the dynamic and talented staff of the Ministry for their dedication and professionalism, urging them to remain focused on the important national duty ahead.
