Menzgold case: NAM 1’s trial moved to virtual hearing over health concerns

An Accra High Court has ordered that the ongoing criminal trial of Nana Appiah Mensah, popularly known as NAM1, former CEO of the defunct gold dealership firm Menzgold, should now be conducted virtually.

The decision was communicated to his legal team on Monday, March 30, 2026, following a medical report submitted by the accused.

According to the medical note from his doctor, NAM1 has been advised to avoid “maximal physical exertion,” which prompted the court to shift proceedings to electronic hearings to protect his health.

NAM1 is facing multiple charges, including defrauding by false pretences, operating a gold trading business without a licence, and money laundering.

He has pleaded not guilty to all the counts and is currently on bail.

The case is part of a long-running prosecution linked to the collapse of Menzgold, which allegedly defrauded thousands of customers across the country.

The High Court had earlier directed NAM1 to open his defence as the trial progresses.

The virtual hearing arrangement is expected to allow the case to continue without compromising the health of the accused, while ensuring that proceedings move forward.

Menzgold’s collapse remains one of the biggest financial scandals in Ghana’s recent history, with many victims still seeking justice and compensation years after the company ceased operations.
