Two suspected armed robbers were shot and killed by police during an exchange of gunfire following a daring daytime robbery at a Mobile Money (MoMo) vendor in Tema Community 5.
The incident occurred on Monday, April 13, 2026, at about 8:30am at the Aba Fosuah Plaza, where the female MoMo vendor operates her business.
According to a press release from the Tema Regional Police Command, one of the suspects, riding as a pillion passenger on a motorbike, approached the vendor under the pretext of making a cash-out transaction.
While the victim was retrieving her phone to process the transaction, the suspect pulled out a pistol and demanded she hand over a bag containing cash.
The vendor resisted, leading to a struggle involving both the pillion rider and the motorbike rider. During the confrontation, the pillion passenger shot the vendor in the leg. The suspects then grabbed the cash and fled on the motorbike, which had registration number M-24-GE 778.
A patrol team from the Tema Regional Operations Unit, which had been deployed nearby for security duties at an event, responded swiftly to a distress call and pursued the fleeing suspects.
Near a junction close to Smart Hotel in Community 6, the suspects reportedly opened fire on the pursuing police officers. The officers returned fire, and in the ensuing shootout, both suspects sustained gunshot wounds and fell off the motorbike.
The injured suspects were rushed to the Police Hospital for treatment but were pronounced dead on arrival by a medical officer.
Their bodies have been deposited at the Police Hospital mortuary for preservation, identification, and autopsy.
The police recovered an empty bullet shell believed to have been discharged during the attack on the vendor.
The Tema Regional Police Command assured the public of its commitment to maintaining safety and security in the area and urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station.
