President John Dramani Mahama has granted presidential approval for the immediate evacuation of 300 distressed Ghanaians from South Africa following a fresh wave of xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals.
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, made the announcement in a Facebook post on Tuesday, May 12, 2026.
“His Excellency John Mahama has granted presidential approval for the immediate evacuation of 300 Ghanaians in South Africa,” Mr Ablakwa stated.
According to the Minister, the affected Ghanaians had complied with an advisory from the Foreign Ministry and duly registered with Ghana’s High Commission in Pretoria for rescue and repatriation.
Mr Ablakwa reassured that the Government of Ghana remains committed to protecting its citizens.
“The Government of Ghana shall continue to safeguard the welfare of all Ghanaians home and abroad,” he emphasized.
The evacuation follows reports of increased xenophobic incidents, including harassment and attacks on African migrants in parts of Johannesburg, Pretoria, and Durban.
