The Parliament of Ghana has officially confirmed the detention of the Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Mr. Kwame Ohene Frimpong, at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, and shared on Parliament’s official social media platforms, the Clerk to Parliament, Mr. Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, disclosed that the House has taken note of the development.
“It has come to the attention of Parliament that the Hon. Member for Asante Akyem North Constituency, Mr. Kwame Ohene Frimpong, has been detained at the Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam in the Netherlands. The Rt. Hon. Speaker and the Leadership of the House are in touch with Ghana’s Mission in The Hague for detailed information on the matter. The public will be duly informed appropriately on this matter,” the statement read in part.
The confirmation follows initial reports on social media about the alleged arrest of the legislator, popularly known as OK Frimpong. The Independent MP, who caucuses with the National Democratic Congress (NDC), won the Asante Akyem North seat in the 2024 general elections.
As of the time of filing this report, details of the reasons for the detention remain unclear. However, unconfirmed reports on social media suggest the detention may be linked to an international investigation reportedly involving the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), with allegations bordering on money laundering and romance scams.
Parliament has assured the public that it is following up through diplomatic channels and will provide further updates in due course.
