A 38-year-old carpenter suspected of defiling his 11-year-old stepdaughter has died by suspected suicide while in police custody at Agyei Krom in the Komenda Edina Eguafo Abirem Municipality of the Central Region.
The suspect, Emmanuel Cudjoe, was arrested at 5 am on Sunday, May 10, 2026, for allegedly defiling the minor. Hours after his arrest, at about 11 am, the station officer at Agyei Krom Police Station received information from the counter NCO that the suspect had hanged himself.
According to police, Cudjoe used a thin cloth he tore from the edge of the blanket provided to him to commit the act. He was found hanging against the wall with the ligature firmly fastened around his neck. No other visible marks were found on his body.
The Elmina District Police Command and the Regional Crime Management Team visited the scene. The Crime Scene Management team processed the area, after which the body was conveyed to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, where he was pronounced dead by the medical officer on duty.
The body has been deposited at the hospital’s morgue pending autopsy. The family of the deceased has been officially notified of the incident.
Police have commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death.
