A nurse has died after a motorbike crash while transporting drugs to her community in the Sissala West District of the Upper West Region.
Nafisa Adama, 32, worked at the Kusali CHPS Compound. On Tuesday, May 12, she rode her motorbike to Gwollu, the district capital, to pick up medicines and medical supplies for residents in Kusali, about 15 kilometres away.
On her way back, the weather turned bad. Heavy rain and strong winds struck midway through her journey. A tricycle coming from the opposite direction lost control in the storm and crashed straight into her. She was carrying containers of drugs on the bike at the time.
She was rushed for emergency treatment, but doctors pronounced her dead about an hour later.
Nafisa was the only health worker in Kusali. Every resident in the community depended on her alone.
The District Health Information Officer, Rauf Bawa Basugu, told the Ghana News Agency that the Ghana Health Service is heartbroken over her death.
“If not for the medical supplies she went to pick up from Gwollu, she probably would not have died,” he said.
Nafisa was a mother of two. She had married just two weeks before the accident took her life.
She was posted to Gwollu in 2023 and later moved to Kusali, where she served as the only health worker until her death.
