Habib Iddrisu leads Minority push for Ablakwa, Kofi Adams and Kenneth Adjei to appear in Parliament

The Minority in Parliament has called for the immediate summoning of three government ministers to the House to answer questions on pressing national issues generating public concern.

The ministers targeted are Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, and Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams.

The demand was made on Tuesday, June 9, during discussions on the Business Statement for the week. The Minority expressed disappointment that the ministers had not been scheduled to brief Parliament on matters of significant public interest.

First Deputy Minority Whip and Tolon MP, Habib Iddrisu, raised concerns over the omission of the Foreign Affairs and Sports Ministers from the parliamentary schedule. He cited growing public debate surrounding the evacuation of Ghanaians from South Africa and reported visa difficulties affecting prospective travellers to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Mr Iddrisu stressed that Parliament has a constitutional duty to hold the Executive accountable, particularly on issues that have attracted widespread attention.

He noted that with the 2026 FIFA World Cup just days away, Parliament deserves a full briefing on the visa challenges and measures being taken to resolve them. He also demanded explanations on the recent repatriation of Ghanaian nationals from South Africa amid reports of xenophobic attacks and insecurity.

On the flooding situation, Effia MP Isaac Nyarko Boamah insisted that the Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources should appear before the House to outline government interventions.

Mr Boamah highlighted how recent heavy rains exposed persistent weaknesses in Accra’s drainage systems and urban planning, leading to destroyed properties, displaced residents, and economic disruptions.

He argued that Parliament must be updated on short and long-term measures to address the perennial flooding problem, especially as the country enters the peak rainy season.

The Minority’s push comes after weekend downpours caused severe flooding in several parts of the Greater Accra Region, leading to renewed calls for sustainable solutions to the capital’s flooding crisis.
