Counsel for Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has filed a motion to withdraw from the high-profile illegal mining case at Samreboi in the Western Region.
Lawyer Andy Appiah Kubi disclosed on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show that he has officially filed the necessary court processes to withdraw his legal services from the matter.
“For Samreboi, I have filed a motion to withdraw from the case. I’m withdrawing my legal services,” he stated.
Appiah Kubi declined to publicly detail his reasons, noting that they are contained in an affidavit filed before the court. The motion is scheduled to be heard on Monday.
“My reasons are in the affidavit. We will take the motion on Monday, so I won’t discuss it,” he said.
“But I have cried in the affidavit. I pray that the court should be a court and when it takes its decision, I will discuss it,” he added.
The lawyer raised concerns about the conduct of the proceedings, describing the case as unusually fast-tracked with limited preparation time for defence counsel.
“The case was like someone was shepherding the case. There was no breathing space. It was fast-tracked,” he claimed.
“If you have something to do, the judge will call you and say come immediately.”
Appiah Kubi further indicated plans to petition the Ghana Bar Association over the matter.
“I will also petition the Bar Association. Will we sit for this to happen?” he questioned.
The Samreboi illegal mining case involves Chairman Wontumi and two others, who are facing charges related to alleged illegal mining activities at a concession in Samreboi in the Western Region. The case has generated significant public and political interest.
The High Court is scheduled to deliver judgment in the case on July 3, 2026.
