Former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo resigns from Council of State

Former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo has reportedly resigned from Ghana’s Council of State, according to information confirmed by Citi News.

Although the circumstances surrounding her resignation remain unclear, sources indicate that Justice Akuffo stopped attending meetings of the Council following developments related to the removal process involving former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

Reports further suggest that she formally submitted her resignation towards the end of 2025.

Justice Akuffo served as Chief Justice of Ghana from 2017 to 2020 and has since remained an influential figure in the country’s judicial and governance landscape.

The Council of State is a constitutional advisory body mandated to counsel the President on matters of governance and national policy. Its membership comprises elected and appointed representatives from across the country.

In April 2025, the Council voted on whether a prima facie case had been established against then Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. Of the 31 members who participated in the process, 30 voted in favour of establishing a prima facie case.

Justice Akuffo was the only member who abstained from the vote, although she did not publicly disclose the reasons behind her decision.

Her reported resignation has not yet been officially confirmed by either the Council of State or the Office of the President.
