A suspected carjacking gang operating in the Kumasi has been dismantled following a police operation that resulted in the death of two suspects and the arrest of another, the Ghana Police Service has confirmed.

According to a statement issued on Thursday, June 18, 2026, the operation targeted a group linked to a series of vehicle thefts across parts of the Ashanti Region. The suspects were reportedly tracked to hideouts at Ahwiaa and Tafo.

One of the suspects, identified as Williams Opoku, was arrested during an intelligence-led operation. He is said to have admitted involvement in several car theft incidents during interrogation and is currently assisting police with investigations.

The police indicated that Opoku and his group were allegedly behind the theft of multiple Toyota Corolla vehicles at locations including the Anwiankwanta–Bekwai road, Pankrono, Moro Market, and Anloga Junction.

Investigators say Opoku later led officers to a workshop where one of the stolen vehicles had been taken for repairs, resulting in its recovery. He is also alleged to have confessed to participating in an armed attack on a police officer at Kronum Brokutu in July 2025, during which an AK-47 rifle and ammunition were stolen.

The police further revealed that Opoku identified several alleged accomplices, including individuals known as Prince (alias “Killer Wooah”), Suley (alias “Shangu Spirit”), Bonkro (alias “Okoronko”), Aki and Yaw Antwi.

Following the arrest, a follow-up operation on June 17, 2026, led officers to suspects riding an unregistered Honda PCX motorbike. During the pursuit, the rider allegedly knocked down a police officer before opening fire, prompting a shootout.

Two suspects, identified as Suley and another known as Long Story, sustained gunshot wounds and were later pronounced dead on arrival at the Bekwai Municipal Hospital. Their bodies have since been deposited at the mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

Police say one suspect, Bonkro, managed to escape, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend him and other members of the gang, as well as recover the stolen vehicles, the AK-47 rifle and ammunition.
