Government of Ghana to conduct independent autopsy on national killed in xenophobic attack in South Africa

The Government of Ghana has resolved to conduct an independent autopsy on the remains of Bashiru Isak, the Ghanaian national who was killed in South Africa amid reported xenophobic attacks.

The decision follows unsuccessful attempts by the Ghana High Commission in Pretoria and Mr Isak’s family to secure the official post-mortem report from South African authorities.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the move was reached in consultation with the deceased’s family to help establish further details surrounding his death.

The Ministry, in a statement issued on Thursday, July 16, reiterated the government’s demand for justice and called on South African authorities to accelerate investigations into the incident, including the arrest and prosecution of persons responsible.

“The Government of Ghana renews its demand for justice. We expect expedited investigations, arrests and prosecution. There must be no room for silence or cover-ups in the gruesome killing of Mr Bashiru Isak,” the Ministry stated.

It added that burial arrangements would proceed in line with Islamic traditions once the independent autopsy had been completed.

The government further assured the family of its continued support and pledged to pursue all necessary diplomatic and legal measures to ensure accountability for Mr Isak’s death.

The Ministry also extended its condolences to Mr Isak’s parents, wife, children and other relatives as they mourn his passing.
