Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has urged the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to intensify tax education and strengthen measures to address revenue leakages to enhance domestic revenue mobilisation.
He made the call when the top management of GRA, led by Board Chairman George Kweku Ricketts-Hagan and Commissioner-General Anthony Sarpong, paid a courtesy visit to him at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi on Friday, August 7, 2026.
According to Otumfuo, many Ghanaians remain unaware of their tax obligations, while others who understand their responsibilities deliberately fail to comply.
He therefore called for sustained public education and sensitisation on taxation and the importance of paying taxes as a civic responsibility.
The Asantehene also urged GRA to adopt innovative strategies to identify and bring unregistered taxpayers into the tax net, particularly operators within the informal sector and other untapped segments of the economy.
He commended the leadership of GRA, particularly the Board, Commissioner-General Anthony Sarpong and the Commissioners of the Domestic Tax Revenue, Customs and Support Services divisions, for improvements recorded in national revenue mobilisation.
However, he noted that significant revenue leakages persist within the system.
Otumfuo observed that avoidable administrative loopholes, underreporting and inefficiencies in revenue collection continue to deprive the state of resources needed for national development.
He therefore encouraged GRA management to complement its revenue mobilisation efforts with robust measures to identify and eliminate revenue leakages.
The Asantehene further emphasised that efficient domestic revenue mobilisation is fundamental to national development and critical to the government’s ability to deliver on its socio-economic commitments to Ghanaians.
Briefing the Asantehene, Commissioner-General Anthony Sarpong highlighted measures being implemented by the Authority to maximise revenue collection, improve tax compliance and enhance operational efficiency.
The visit also provided an opportunity for the formal introduction of members of GRA Board of Directors to the Asantehene and for the delegation to seek his blessings.
The delegation also announced the retirement of Agnes Adu Gyamfi Adjei, Ashanti Regional Director of GRA.
