Speaker Bagbin threatens dismissal for parliamentary security officers caught drunk on duty

Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has warned newly recruited parliamentary assistant security officers against reporting for duty under the influence of alcohol.

He cautioned that officers who violate the directive will face disciplinary action, with a third offence resulting in dismissal from Parliament.

Mr Bagbin issued the warning on Friday, August 29, 2026, during the passing-out ceremony for 69 newly recruited parliamentary assistant security guards.

He urged the officers to uphold discipline, professionalism and commitment as they assume their responsibilities within the Parliamentary precincts.

The Speaker stressed that the officers must keep their social activities separate from their official duties, particularly given the sensitive nature of their role in protecting Parliament.

He further urged them to remain vigilant and strictly enforce access control and other security protocols to safeguard the Parliamentary precincts.

“No alcoholism. Once we come and we smell alcohol from you, I can assure you, you’ll be disciplined. And on the third occasion, you’ll be booted out,” he said.

Mr Bagbin emphasised the importance of discipline among personnel tasked with protecting Parliament, describing it as essential to safeguarding Ghana’s democratic institutions.

“The protection of our democracy begins with the yielding discipline of those tasked to guard its pillars,” he added.
