The Bank of Ghana is set to introduce an upgraded series of Ghana Cedi banknotes, known as the Heritage Series, as part of efforts to strengthen currency security, durability and efficiency.
Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama, announced the initiative in a statement, saying the new series is designed to respond to evolving currency circulation patterns, technological advancements and higher security standards.
The Heritage Series is themed “The Cedi, Our Future: Secure, Designed to Last.”
According to Dr Asiama, the upgraded banknotes will feature enhanced security measures, improved durability and modern designs that reflect Ghana’s heritage and national aspirations.
He said the new notes are intended to provide stronger protection against counterfeiting, withstand prolonged circulation and help reduce the cost of currency management.
The Governor also noted that the Heritage Series will celebrate Ghanaian identity by incorporating national heroes and Ghanaian iconographic elements into the designs of the various denominations.
Dr Asiama stressed that the introduction of the new banknotes will not make existing Ghana Cedi notes invalid.
The Heritage Series will circulate alongside the existing banknotes, and the public will not be required to exchange or withdraw their current notes solely because of the introduction of the new series.
The Governor also appealed to Ghanaians, businesses, traders and financial institutions to handle banknotes properly and avoid practices such as writing on, crumpling or stapling notes, as well as using them for money bouquets, spraying and other forms of currency abuse.
He said proper handling would help preserve the quality of banknotes, reduce replacement costs and support efficient currency management.
The Ghana Cedi Heritage Series will be officially launched on November 3, 2026, at Bank Square in Accra.
