The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced it will hold a press conference tomorrow to address the Electoral Commission’s decision to rerun the parliamentary election in the Ablekuma North constituency.
This comes after the Electoral Commission (EC) announced that it would rerun the election in 19 polling stations within the constituency on Friday, July 11, 2025. The move follows a prolonged impasse in declaring results for the area, more than seven months after voting was held on December 7, 2024 which has left the constituency without representation in parliament.
The collation process was disrupted on election day, leading to the destruction of some of the original result sheets. An initial attempt by the Commission to use duplicate pink sheets for collation was met with resistance, with disagreements arising between the two leading parties, the NDC and the NPP, over their authenticity. This dispute effectively stalled the announcement of the final results.
In a statement released on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, the EC’s Deputy Chairperson in charge of Operations, Samuel Tettey, explained that the decision to rerun the election in the 19 affected polling stations was taken after extensive consultations with representatives of both the NDC and NPP.
Despite several engagements, including a key meeting held on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, and a prior one on June 12, consensus remained elusive for months.
The central point of contention was the validity of 37 pink sheets submitted by the NPP during the collation. While the NDC raised concerns over the authenticity of the scanned copies and called for a rerun in all 37 polling stations, the NPP argued that 34 of the pink sheets had already been verified, leaving only three in question.
Mr. Tettey added that although both party agents had agreed on the scanned results from 19 polling stations, the presiding officers for those stations had not signed off on the forms, prompting the Commission to settle on a partial rerun to resolve the matter.
