President Mahama directs Auditor-General to investigate $245 million All-African Games

President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Auditor-General to conduct a forensic investigation into the $245 million expenditure incurred when Ghana hosted the 13th All-African Games in 2024.

As directed by the President, the Auditor-General is to investigate all financial and operational aspects of the Games, including procurement, expenditure, infrastructure, and post-event management.

Specifically, the Auditor-General has been directed to examine tender procedures, the selection of contractors and suppliers, and compliance with the Public Procurement Act (Act 663), as amended.

The Auditor-General is also expected to review funding sources, disbursements, expenditures, and sponsorship arrangements, as well as assess project timelines, cost variations, and value-for-money outcomes of works executed for the Games.

President Mahama has also directed that the audit evaluate the performance and coordination of all government agencies and committees involved in planning and executing the Games.

The Auditor-General has been given until the second week of December 2025 to present the audit findings to President John Dramani Mahama.

The 13th African Games was hosted in Ghana from March 8 to March 23, 2024.

Despite bringing athletes from across the continent together to compete and positioning Ghana as a sporting hub, the event was plagued with public demands for accountability over expenditure.

Critics have cited a detailed breakdown of budget allocations, including a $15 million spent on the feeding of athletes and officials as unconscionable.
