Ghanaian musician Wanlov the Kubolor, has revealed that his time of imprisonment in the US, felt like living in a hotel due to his experience during Senior High School (SHS) days at Adisadel College.
The artiste made the comparison during an appearance on Joy Prime on Thursday, November 6, where he reflected on the harsh conditions he endured as a student at the prestigious Cape Coast-based boarding school.
“When I went to prison in America, I felt like I was in a hotel because of the kind of hustling I had gone through in Adisadel,” Wanlov said.
He explained that the strict schedules, limited freedom, and survival tactics required in Ghanaian boarding schools closely resembled the realities of prison life.
Wanlov recounted instances of poor food quality at Adisadel, including meals that caused widespread illness among students.
“We used to eat turkey and rice that gave everyone running stomachs the next day because the turkey was expired,” he said, adding that some dishes even contained wall geckos.
Despite coming from a peaceful home where his father never used harsh discipline, Wanlov said the secondary school environment influenced him to adopt punitive behaviour toward juniors, a trait he later recognized as foreign to his character.
He told the host that American inmates were surprised by his composure, assuming he was a seasoned prisoner, when in fact his resilience stemmed from his boarding school experience.
“For me, prison was like a normal holiday,” he said with a laugh.
