The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is set to wrap up his mediation efforts in the protracted Bawku chieftaincy conflict with two final sessions scheduled for November 30 and December 1, 2025.
A statement issued by Manhyia Palace on Monday November 10, 2025, described the upcoming meetings as the concluding session of the monarch’s intervention in the long-standing dispute between the Kusasi and Mamprusi ethnic groups in the Upper East Region.
“The Asantehene has scheduled two days, November 30 and December 1, 2025, for what is expected to be the concluding session of his mediation in the Bawku chieftaincy conflict,” the press release stated.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, renowned for his role in resolving several chieftaincy disputes across Ghana, commended both parties for their positive engagement throughout the process.
“His Majesty praises both sides for their positive approach to the mediation so far,” the statement noted.
Signed by the Chief of Staff at the Office of the Asantehene, Kofi Badu, the statement issued a strong appeal for restraint.
The Asantehene urged all concerned parties to avoid any actions that could derail progress toward a lasting solution, emphasizing the need for continued cooperation to prevent further escalation.
“His Majesty praises both sides for their positive approach to the mediation so far and appeals to all concerned to avoid any actions likely to affect the progress towards a lasting solution to the Bawku conflict,” the statement said.
The Bawku chieftaincy conflict, one of Ghana’s most enduring ethnic and traditional disputes, dates back to the colonial era and has intermittently flared into deadly violence since independence.
Otumfuo’s mediation was initiated under the auspices of the National House of Chiefs and supported by the government.
