The Minority in Parliament has served notice of its resolve to push for a secret vote to determine the House’s approval of the nomination of Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as Chief Justice.
Contributing to a debate on a report presented to the House by the Appointments Committee following the vetting of the nominee on Monday, November 10, 2025, Minority Leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin said his side would demand a secret ballot.
“We will not belabour the point. We maintain our opposition to this nomination and reject it, and we are going to demand a secret ballot to reject this. We are going to demand a secret ballot to vote and let Hansard record our opposition,” he said.
The House debate follows the submission of the Appointments Committee’s report on the vetting of Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie on Monday.
Presenting the report, Committee Chairman Bernard Ahiafor said the committee had recommended the approval of the nominee by a majority vote. He added that Minority members on the committee had voted en bloc to reject the nominee’s approval.
The Minority has insisted on its opposition to the Chief Justice nominee’s approval, citing pending legal cases challenging the removal of his predecessor, Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, by President John Dramani Mahama.
