Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has held high-level talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv, focusing primarily on securing the release of two Ghanaian citizens detained as prisoners of war.
In a post shared following the meeting on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, Ablakwa revealed that he was graciously hosted by President Zelenskyy earlier on Wednesday. The discussions centered on Ghana’s humanitarian appeal for the release of the two nationals, who were captured while reportedly fighting on the side of Russian forces in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
“Our bilateral talks explored how our two countries can effectively combat the threat posed by trafficking networks who lure vulnerable unsuspecting youth from Africa only to end up risking their lives in the ongoing war,” Ablakwa stated.
He expressed optimism about the outcome, noting, “I am optimistic that we shall be successful in our negotiations.”
The minister also conveyed the gratitude of President John Dramani Mahama and the Government of Ghana to President Zelenskyy for ensuring the rights of the detained citizens are protected in line with international law. Reports indicate the two Ghanaians are in good health and have not suffered torture or inhumane treatment.
The engagement comes on the back of concerns over recruitment practices, with Ukraine alleging that Russia has enlisted over 1,700 Africans from various countries through deceptive means, promising jobs but deploying them to the front lines.
Beyond the prisoners of war issue, the two sides agreed to deepen bilateral relations through strategic interventions in key sectors including agriculture, defence, education, and trade.
President Zelenskyy extended a formal invitation to President Mahama to visit Kyiv, signaling Ukraine’s interest in elevating diplomatic ties with Ghana.
Ablakwa emphasized the Mahama Administration’s commitment to protecting the life and rights of all Ghanaians.
