Minority leader in Parliament Alexander Afenyo-Markin has criticised the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) over the re-arrest and continued detention of former Chief Executive Officer of the National Food and Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO), Abdul-Wahab Hanan Aludiba, and his wife, Faiza Seidu Wuni.
The couple was re-arrested by EOCO operatives on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, shortly after the Attorney-General withdrew all charges against them and three others in the long-running buffer stock case at the Accra High Court.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, May 6, Afenyo-Markin described the actions as “shameful, reprehensible and most unworthy of a healthy democracy that Ghana has struggled to build over the past 33 years.”
He noted that the accused persons had been arraigned in court for nearly a year on charges that defence counsel, led by Godfred Yeboah Dame, successfully challenged during the Case Management Conference. Objections raised by the defence were upheld by the court. The Attorney-General then attempted to introduce fresh witness statements without leave of the court, a move that was also blocked.
“The Attorney-General’s next move was to withdraw all the charges against the accused persons,” Afenyo-Markin stated. He argued that EOCO should have conducted more thorough investigations before deciding on fresh charges, rather than impulsively re-arresting the couple for offences unknown even to their legal team.
The minority leader highlighted that lawyers for the accused were denied access to their clients at the EOCO premises from about 11am to 8pm on Tuesday, despite the couple having been on court-granted bail prior to the withdrawal of charges. They have since been refused bail and remain in custody.
Afenyo-Markin linked the re-arrest to the government’s “failed ORAL promise,” recalling that the Attorney-General had held a press conference last year citing the buffer stock case as a major example while vilifying the accused before charges were even filed.
“The EOCO boss, Raymond Archer, must learn to operate in accordance with due process like his predecessors used to do. That important institution of state must not be turned into a rogue outfit for harassing and torturing innocent citizens extra-judicially,” he added.
He called for the immediate release of Abdul-Wahab Hanan Aludiba and his wife, describing the actions as impunity that must stop.
The former NAFCO CEO and his wife, along with others, faced multiple charges including stealing, conspiracy to steal, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state over alleged diversion of funds meant for buffer stock operations. The Attorney-General’s office cited the discovery of fresh evidence as the reason for withdrawing the original charges.
