Affirmative action must deliver — Betty Krosbi Mensah calls on judiciary and police to act

Former Member of Parliament for Kwahu Afram Plains North, Betty. Seyram  Krosbi Mensah has called on the judiciary, law enforcement agencies and the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection to strictly enforce the Affirmative Action (Gender Equality) Act 2024 to ensure women occupy at least 30% of leadership positions.

The National Coordinator of the National Recreation and Wellness Programme, who also doubles as Technical Advisor to the Minister of Sports and Recreation, said the law which she helped steer through Parliament as a member of the Gender and Children Committee in the 8th Parliament, must now deliver tangible results.

“Today we have also passed the affirmative action into law and we are expecting that not less than 30% of every position that is leadership positions is given to women. Women should be given not less than 30% of that opportunity,” she emphasised.

Betty Krosbi Mensah urged the Ghana Police Service, the Judiciary and relevant ministries to see to the full implementation of the Act, warning that without enforcement, Ghana would miss the opportunity to harness the full potential of its women.

“We believe that with women in the right leadership, we will stand tall and we will stand victorious,” she stated.

The former legislator stressed that women’s contributions to national development remain under-recognised, adding that domestic violence and other gender-based challenges must also be addressed more aggressively.

She was speaking on the back of the 2026 International Women’s Day which fell on March 8, 2026.

International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender equality.
