Police in the Ashanti South Region have arrested a suspect in connection with the possession of a large quantity of substances suspected to be Indian hemp (commonly known as ‘wee’ or weed) after intercepting a commercial vehicle at a checkpoint in Asanso Bekwai, Ashanti Region.

According to a Graphic report, the arrest occurred on Monday, January 26, 2026, when officers on snap check duty stopped a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter bus with registration number AC 718-25 at the Asanso checkpoint.

A thorough search of the vehicle uncovered nine nylon sacks hidden inside, which contained a total of 713 compressed slabs of dried leaves suspected to be narcotic drugs.

According to a police situational report (SITREP), the suspect, identified as Atampugri Akanyani, who was the driver of the bus, allegedly attempted to bribe the officers with GH¢150,000 to secure his release. The officers firmly rejected the bribe offer.

The suspect is currently in police custody and is assisting with ongoing investigations. Authorities are working to trace the origin of the suspected narcotics and identify any other individuals involved in the operation.
